We are always excited to introduce another member of our hardworking caregiver team. This month, meet Andrea Escalante. Andrea was nominated as our March 2015 Caregiver of the Month! She is a wonderful member of our San Diego caregiver team and another great reminder how fortunate we are to work with the people that we do.
Grace Care Management is pleased to highlight Neuropsychologist Dr. Mark McDonough this month. Neuropsychology is a special profession that focuses on brain functioning and can have significant outcomes for patients. We thank Dr. McDonough for taking the time to educate us about his practice and the benefits of neuropsychology. We hope you enjoy his interview!
Besides one fall a couple of years ago, which broke his nose and put out some teeth, he was in good health. I met him after he read an article of mine in the local paper. He and another Abbot wanted to meet and give me their benediction.
As I headed up the hill to see him late in the afternoon, I still harbored a few assumptions: I assumed that the community of Benedictine monks he belonged to was mostly aged, and that as such they’d be mostly stricken with ailments familiar to the infirm elderly.
This month we recognize another wonderful member of our staff and introduce you to caregiver Jessica Hernandez. She is our February 2015 Caregiver of the Month! Jessica’s energy and outlook on life is infectious and we are grateful to have her on our San Diego caregiver team. She spreads warmth and kindness to everyone she works with, which is what makes her so special.
This month Grace Care highlights one of our favorite doctors, Dr. Jeremy Fine from Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. We’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with Dr. Fine to serve our mutual clients since 2011. He is a true example of what we all want our doctor to be: available, compassionate, and someone who really takes the time to listen. Dr. Fine expanded to a concierge practice ten years ago so he can offer these things to his patients. We sat down with him recently to talk about his concierge practice and also to get advice on how to find the right doctor to fit your needs.
This month we share a very personal story by our guest writer Robin Curry. The story of Robin’s mother’s death is heartbreaking and brutally honest about the lingering sense of betrayal she feels towards the medical system she trusted.
She reminds us of the importance of finding the right doctor and team to help our loved one through vulnerable times of need. A doctor and team who knows us, has time enough to listen and to care. Hopefully this team includes a nurse care manager who can coordinate care and make sure the system is working the way it’s supposed to.
This month Bea shares her story and we learn what inspired her to become a caregiver. It is another reminder of how grateful we are to have a team with such a passion for caring for others. It’s this special gift that we are thankful to be able to extend to our clients who need it most. From the entire Grace Care team, we thank you Bea for all that you do!

Geriatric Care Managers are guides for the aging journey. These nurses, social workers, and other allied health professionals are experienced in elder care and have a special skill set to help you and your family understand the various challenges of aging.
I like to compare having a Geriatric Care Manager to having a guide to help you through an unfamiliar country. Your guide knows the best way to get where you’re going and the safest, quickest way to get there.
Grace Care has had the pleasure of having Peggy Kershek on staff for three years now and we never tire of seeing her smiling face and being around her warm energy. Peggy has cared for a gentleman during her time with us who is very near and dear to all of our hearts and they have made a great team. As you will read, she has been helping others for almost all of her life and continues to give back through her work and volunteering in the community.
As we approach the holiday we thought it was a wonderful time to share Peggy’s story and express our thanks for all that she does. We hope you enjoy meeting another one of our wonderful San Diego caregivers!
As a follow up to our recent article on innovations in dementia care, we thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to the Glenner Memory Care Centers. They are a 33-year-old organization serving family caregivers and loved ones with Alzheimer’s and other Memory Disorders. The Glenner Adult Day Programs and caregiver support groups offer another forward thinking solution to those needing care solutions. We sat down with Glenner’s CEO Anette Asher to bring you details on their care model, which is breaking new ground for those effected by dementia or Alzheimer’s.
