Every month Grace Care features a local business that we highly recommend in the community. Each article will include helpful information to our readers.
What exactly does a dental hygienist do?
A dental hygienist plays multiple roles in oral health care. We are technicians, educators, and typically the oral health care providers that are the first to observe and recognize if any oral diseases are taking place.
What made you interested in becoming a mobile hygienist and are there many like you in San Diego?
I had a few long time patients that were working in assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care facilities. I asked them who was caring for their residents and they said no one. I have always really enjoyed my elderly and special needs patients and started to realize that this is an area that is really being neglected.
There are more and more RDHAP’s each year, but still not enough to take care of this growing section of the population.
What type of patients do you generally see?
I see anyone who has difficulty getting to the dental office due to mental or physical difficulties. I can see people in their private homes, or in a residential facility.
What does a typical home visit like?
Just like going to the dental office for a cleaning, but in the comfort of your own home. I can see people in a wheelchair, on the couch, or in their bed. Where ever the person is most comfortable.
Are your services covered by insurance?
Yes, many PPO and Fee-for-Service dental insurance companies will reimburse for these services.
Any quick tips about best ways to care for your teeth at home?
Use something to clean between your teeth each day, in addition to a gentle tooth brushing at the gum line. Most decay and gum disease starts here. Whether it is floss, proxy brushes, tooth picks, or a water pick, find something that you will use and be religious about it. Your dental hygienist should be able to help with suggestions that will fit your lifestyle and abilities.
